World Energy Saving Day 2021
Within the framework of World Energy Saving Day, Enka, a leading company in the recycling of post-consumer PET bottles in the country, highlights the importance of recycling in order to save energy. Implementing recycling involves much more than just reducing the amount of waste, it plays a fundamental role in saving energy, which in the long run has an impact on reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, in the use of oil. , electricity and water.
The reuse of PET, the main product that the Company recycles, has infinite benefits, and one of them is the reduction of energy use, since its production from recycled raw materials consumes 92% less energy than if the same process with virgin raw materials. In this sense, Enka, which transforms more than 3 million PET bottles daily, manages to generate energy savings similar to the consumption of 292,000 households.
“At Enka we continue to bet on the Circular Economy as leaders in the recycling of PET bottles in South America, also understanding the multiple benefits that this process has in the care and saving of essential resources such as energy. We are convinced of the importance of an action, which may well be individual, such as recycling and its impact on the planet ”, said Álvaro Hincapié Vélez, President of Enka of Colombia.
These processes are key to caring for the environment and natural resources, since PET containers can take more than 100 years to degrade. In addition, when recycling raw materials are reused, instead of spending energy extracting them from the earth and transforming them. On the other hand, it should be noted that, with lower energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions and greenhouse gases.
“Committed to sustainability, we continue to implement actions that generate energy savings in the different production processes. For this reason, we are building a new plant for the production of EKO®PET that will allow us to double the collection levels and at the same time generate energy savings close to the consumption of 600,000 homes, which represents having a city like Cali turned off ”, concluded Álvaro Hincapié Velez.
